Eraser Epidemic
By Malvina Wan
First Place, Junior Category
In a seaside town called Lucky Meadow in the local art gallery, the visitors began to notice something strange happening with the paintings. The smallest details started to disappear from the artwork. First a few shadows, some freckles on faces, a hair strand or two and the grains in the wood. People all around were confused by what was happening as this was also occurring in people's homes with the photographs on the wall. But the real shock came the next week when the colour began to fade, then quickly disappeared as well, leaving only the outline of what used to be there. And then the worst part happened. All the pictures and paintings disappeared completely leaving only blank canvases and paper.
Little did people know that this wasn’t the worst part of this eraser epidemic. Because the worst was yet to come. The people in the town started fading as well. Meanwhile in a lab across town a junior scientist was doing experiments with pollen when he noticed the hairs on his arm were disappearing. Suddenly on his arm appeared a tiny moth-like creature that had touched the pollen on his hand. These were the creatures responsible for the eraser epidemic. Quickly he made a solution of pollen and water. He sprayed it all over his lab and appearing out of thin air were hundreds of these moths. Not only did the solution reveal the moths but it also killed them dead. He filled dozens of squirt bottles with the solution and delivered them around town. Soon everyone was squirting every surface they could. A few days later all the moths were gone and the epidemic was over. But the damage was done and never came back.
The Ant and the Grasshopper
By Victoria Ren
Second Place, Primary Category
In a field one summer's day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart's content.
(Singing and dancing)
I didn’t know I was a Grasshopper
But now I know and am very happy
And I didn’t know I was green
An Ant walked along, carrying a few pieces of corn.
(Moving across the stage)
“The ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah,
The ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah”
Taking it back to its colony.
"Why are you carrying that corn all that way, why don’t you come play with me? Tag and hopscotch and hide-and-seek!"
“I’m getting corn because winter is coming near and I need to get ready. I think you should do that, too.”
"But winter is a long way away. Why don’t you put that corn down and come play with me. Tag and hopscotch and hide-and-seek!”
The ant just walked away with its corn to its colony. The grasshopper decided to just play by himself, while singing:
I didn’t know I was a Grasshopper
But now I know and am very happy
And I didn’t know I was green
Winter finally came, after a lot of ants carrying corn
“The ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah”
And a grasshopper playing by himself.
“Tag and hopscotch and hide-and-seek!”
It began to get colder, and it was starting to snow. The ant and the grasshopper rushed back inside. The ants began to eat, but the grasshopper, who was also hungry, didn’t have any food. He realized he had made a mistake.
The ants saw the grasshopper and they shared their food.
As the grasshopper happily ate, he realized that he had learned a lesson:
Don’t slack off. Be prepared for tomorrow.
Cookie and Milk: A Friendship Story
By Cadence Liang
Third Place, Primary Category
Once upon a time in Dessertville, there lived two treats.
(waving) “Hi, I’m Cookie!”
(waving) “Howdy, I’m Milk!”
They were the best of friends. Wherever one went, the other followed.
One day, they were chilling in the fridge when Cookie suddenly shouted,
(shivering) “Cold! Cold! Cold!”
“What’s wrong?”
“He’s freezing!” said Pie from the top shelf.
“Take him to the hospital,” added Ice Cream from the freezer.
(Moving across the stage) So Milk rushed Cookie to the hospital and waited anxiously. After a while, Cookie woke up.
“You’re awake!”
“I was just too cold. It was my first time in the fridge. Hey, I know what will make me feel better — let’s go to the toaster tomorrow. It’s my favourite place. Want to come?”
(Unsure) “Okay…”
He wanted to make his friend happy. (bend knees as if in toaster) But the toaster was much too hot for Milk. He tried to endure it, but finally…
“I can’t take this! (Milk pops up) This is all your fault! I feel like I’m going to spoil!”
(Milk storms off)
Later at home, Milk felt lonely. He looked through old photos of them at the park and the carnival.
(Sighing) “Maybe I was too harsh. I miss Cookie. I should apologize.”
Nervously, Milk went to Cookie’s jar.
(Sound of three knocks)
“Cookie… I’m really, really sorry.”
(Smiling) “It’s okay. I’m sorry too. I shouldn’t have made you go somewhere you felt uncomfortable.”
(They both laugh)
“Maybe best friends don’t have to do everything together.”
“Yeah, but we can still stick by each other.”
“Want to go to the park and start over?”
“Of course!”
And from that day on, Cookie and Milk stayed best friends — just a little wiser than before.
Best Toothpick Ever
By Jacob Wei
Honourable Mention, Primary Category
Once upon a time there was a toothpick named Maxy. Like all toothpicks he really wanted to pick food out of someone’s teeth.
Pick pick pick
Everyday he would watch his friends pick food from people’s teeth. Apple skins, bits of chicken and chunks of broccoli. But he was never chosen to pick the food. One day he was picked up and he thought,
“Yay!! I’m finally picked.”
But instead he was poked into a piece of apple and cheese and used as an appetizer. Luckily he wasn’t thrown away after that. Someone picked him up again and he thought,
“Oh boy! This time I’m going to the teeth!”
But someone used him to poke the back of a clock to reset it.
“Oh man! I just want to pick some teeth!”
Suddenly a child picked him up and he thought for sure he was going to the teeth. But the child grabbed some glue and made a toothpick airplane. The child began to play with the airplane very hard
Airplane sound: Reeeooowwwwrrr
and he smashed it on the ground.
Smash sound KKKKKKKKK!
Toothpicks went flying everywhere, including Maxy. He laid on the ground feeling very sad. When he heard a man say,
“Who used all the toothpicks?”
The man saw Maxy lying on the floor and he picked him up and said,
“Ah ha! I found one.”
He put Maxy straight into his tooth and picked out a large piece of bacon. Maxy felt so happy and said,
“Finally I was used for the teeth.”

By Caleb Wang
Honourable Mention, Primary Categry

He had been sitting on Mt. Everest for over 100 years, just thinking and thinking and thinking
He is so wise, he could predict the future
He is so wise, he could do all of Belac’s homework
He is so wise, he could figure out how to make the Canucks win a game
Ok maybe not that wise
Belec knew the question he would ask
So he started climbing
He climbed for days
He climbed for weeks
He climbed for 2 solid months
He was so excited to reach that top. All he could think about was how nervous he was to talk to the wise man.
He sees the cave, he enters the cave, he approaches the wise man
The wise man says - speak now and I will answer any question you have
Belac can’t concentrate - he is so nervous!
The wise man says - speak now so I can go back to thinking
Balec was sooooo distracted and so nervous he could not say anything
The wise man says - speak and speak now or else I will never answer your question
And Belac knows he has to say something but he is so nervous he says the first thing that pops into his mind
Can I use your toilet?
And so we learn a valuable lesson from Belac - go to the toilet before your class starts
