WRiting Contest #3 - Story script
From folk tales told around a campfire to weekend adventures recounted to friends in school halls, oral stories are one of the most powerful ways we share information–and entertain each other too! For BASA’s story script contest, we invite students to write a story that is meant to be told out loud (not just read silently). The story could be a fictional tale, a retelling of a folk tale, or a personal story. Whether breathing new life into a classic story or capturing a key event from your own life, oral stories help us hold on to tales worth telling.
Successful oral stories use…
A clear structure (beginning, middle, end)
Character, Goal, Obstacles, and Solution
Repetition of key words, phrases, and events (especially the rule of 3!)
Audience engagement (rhetorical questions or use of chants and rhymes for the audience to join in)
Stage directions to show important gestures or sound effects
