Mr. Evans

Mr. Evans comes from a long line of educators, which is exactly why he never planned to teach. “You’d be so good at it!” his mother said. “It’s what you’re made to do!” his grandfather said. “Never!” said Mr. Evans. But life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and when he found himself facilitating creative writing classes for undergraduate students at UBC, he was shocked to discover that he did like teaching. Not only did he like it--he found it energizing and profound and extremely enjoyable. So, his mother and grandfather were right, after all. Drat!

At the heart of Mr. Evans’ teaching practice is clear communication. Whether that means devising a precise thesis for an essay or speech, being able to execute a thrilling story in a short time for an SSAT test, create a compelling character for an improvised monologue, or paint a picture for an audience using only words, his goal is to take the ideas in your head and help translate them to paper or the stage.

Mr. Evans holds a MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia, and is a former editor of PRISM International, one of Canada’s most-established literary journals. His writing has appeared in Best Canadian Poetry, The Literary Review, Maisonneuve, and other magazines and anthologies in Canada, USA, Australia, Ireland, and beyond, and has been shortlisted for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize. His debut collection of short stories, Nothing Could Be Further from the Truth, was published by House of Anansi Press in 2022.
