meet our teachers

Mr. Wong

One crisp autumn afternoon in 1997, 7-year-old Mr. Wong attended his first BASA class in a tiny office at Shaughnessy United Church. He enjoyed it so much, he never left.

With over 23 years of BASA involvement, "extensive" barely covers Mr. Wong's experience with speech arts, having taught well over 20,000 speech arts classes since first becoming a teacher at 17. The son of first-generation immigrants, Mr. Wong recognizes the value of exploring stories created by people who you identify with and emphasizes that in his classes through constant sight reading, speech writing, and creative writing. Above all, he is dedicated to helping students tell their stories, whether they are preparing for a competitive festival performance, a slam poetry event, or a university or scholarship application.

Current and former students of Mr. Wong’s include AmBASAdors, BASA Faculty Assistants, Finalists in National and International Debate Tournaments, Ivy League University students, multiple back-to-back Provincial Speech Arts Festival delegates, RCM gold medalists, a Taiwanese-Canadian slam poet, and a fellow BASA Teacher. At BASA, Mr. Wong also directs the AmBASAdors (pun wholly intended), a leadership and community service program, and the BASA Faculty Assistants, a student-employment program. Both programs are reserved for BASA’s most dedicated, hardworking, and talented senior students.

Mr. Wong has an M.A. in Children's Literature from UBC where he completed his graduate thesis on Harry Potter, a B.A. from SFU in English and History, and an Associate Diploma from Trinity College London in Speech and Drama.
